FATHER JIM MILLER (1935-1999)

Father Jim Miller came to Kentucky to play a concert for the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society at the estate of Oscar Wilson, on Winchester Road near Lexington, Kentucky. Father Miller played this concert on the Kentucky Theatre’s 3/14 Mighty Wurlitzer organ, where it had been reinstalled in 1979 in the Wilson mansion.

It is fortuitous that William H. Johnson recorded this special concert on September 9, 1982, being that there are no extant recordings of the 3/14 Wurlitzer from the Kentucky Theatre. Two concert samples have been selected from the Johnson recording for your listening enjoyment.

If there is enough interest from the theatre organ public, these concert recordings may be digitally remastered and issued as a special CD commemorating Father Jim Miller and the Kentucky Theatre’s 3/14 Mighty Wurlitzer.

The July/August issue of Theatre Organ contains a extensive feature article Remembering of Father Jim, which includes personal commentary by Dr. Jack Courter, Professor of Music and College Organist at Berea College, Berea, Kentucky.
